Looking Forward with the Executive Director & Board of Directors

While the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum has completed a wonderful 2017, I look forward to 2018 as being a “transformational” year for the OCSM. This year we will establish the OCSM as a premier children’s museum and begin to set the stage for embarking on celebrating 25 years since the OCSM officially opened its doors and exhibits to the community. With the Board of Directors’ adopted 2017-2020 strategic plan in the Fall 2017, much attention will be paid to ensuring the OCSM is well-connected with P-20 schools, public organizations and groups, and businesses throughout the Champaign-Urbana area.

With our historical focus on K-5 children being foundational, our priorities continue to include establishing key partnerships and collaborations to support expanding the OSCM’s ability to provide innovative K-12 outreach and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) educational opportunities for all population groups in our regional communities. This extends to a P-20 focus with our partnerships with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Colleges of Engineering and Business.

The strategic advancement of the OCSM will stress the boundaries of our facility, which is a good thing. However, with that being said, there are always opportunities for generous support to address the maintenance well-being of our home; the New Orpheum Theatre (built in 1914). A short list for this 104-year-old family member includes a new or updated

  • roof,
  • electrical wiring,
  • HVAC system,
  • flooring,
  • windows, and
  • doors.

The OCSM is proud to be a steward for taking care of the New Orpheum Theatre while providing STEM educational opportunities for our children.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we all look forward to and appreciate all the support that the Champaign-Urbana region provides the OCSM. Thank you!
